Final design will be completed in early summer. We will advertise to hire a contractor for construction after the final design is complete. We plan to start work in early fall 2025. 

Overview and History

The City has about 173 miles of wastewater pipes. Many of these pipes are over 60 years old. In 2007, we started a program to replace old and damaged pipes. We do regular video inspections to find pipes that are damaged. Pipes are then scheduled for replacement or repair based on the amount of damage.

We have two preferred methods that allow us to replace or repair the sewer pipe without digging:

  • Install a resin-soaked liner inside the existing pipe which hardens when cured. This is known as a Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP) liner.
  • Pull a new pipe through the existing pipe and break up the old pipe as the new one is placed. This is known as Pipe Bursting.

If necessary, we will dig down to the old pipe to replace it. Our goal is to replace more pipes by choosing proven methods with the lowest cost.

2025-2026 Sewer Pipe Repair and Replacement

In 2025 and 2026, we will replace almost a mile of sewer pipes. We will also replace or repair some damaged stormwater pipes that are near the sewer pipes.

For most pipes, we will use the Cured-in-Place and Pipe Bursting methods that are described above. In some locations, new manholes and side sewers will be replaced. Construction will include:

  • Pavement removal and repair
  • Digging
  • Pipe repair or replacement
  • Temporary traffic control

During construction, there will be road lane closures and decreased sewer service. There will also be construction noise. Residents that live nearby will be notified before the construction starts. We will provide details about the timing and impacts of the project.

2025 Project Site Locations

  • Area 1: Alley between 20th Avenue NW and 21st Avenue NW south of NW 197th Street.
  • Area 2: 1st Avenue NE from NE 185th Street to NE 180th Street
  • Area 3: Various locations from NE 165th Street to NE 167th Street between Interstate 5 and 5th Avenue NE
  • Area 4: 160th Street NE on the Fircrest Campus

Tree Impacts

We will not remove any trees during this project. There may be minor impacts to tree roots during construction.

  • Preliminary Design: Early 2024
  • Design: Summer 2024 to Spring 2025
  • Final Design and Award Construction Contract: Summer 2025
  • Construction: Fall 2025 to Winter 2026
