Background
Chapter 2.70 of the Shoreline Municipal Code directs that a City Council Salary Commission be established every four years to review, establish, and potentially adjust the salaries and benefits for Shoreline elected officials (the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and City Councilmembers). As an alternative to a city council adopting its own salary rates from time to time, state law (RCW 35.21.015) authorizes a city council to establish an independent salary commission, which is authorized to set the salaries and benefits of the council. The Shoreline City Council Salary Commission was last established in 2022 and will be reestablished in 2026.
Current City Council Salaries and Benefits
At the conclusion of the 2022 City Council Salary Commission, the Commission approved the 2022 City Council Salary Commission Final Report, which set compensation for the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and City Councilmembers for the next four years.
2026 Salary Commission Membership and Application
The mayor will appoint three Shoreline residents to serve on the City Council Salary Commission, subject to confirmation by the City Council. To be eligible to serve on the Salary Commission, you must be a resident of Shoreline and a registered voter of King County. You cannot serve on the Salary Commission if you are an officer, official, or employee of the City of Shoreline or an immediate family member of an officer, official, or employee of the City of Shoreline.
The 2026 Salary Commission application period is now closed. The Mayor and City Council will be appointing members to the 2026 Salary Commission in March 2026. If you have any questions about serving on the City Council Salary Commission, please contact John Norris, Deputy City Manager, at jnorris@shorelinewa.gov, or (206) 801-2212.
