King County Metro is temporarily relocating a bus layover from 8th Ave NW near Richmond Beach Road to NW 195th St and 3rd Ave NW in front of Einstein Middle School during construction of a nearby development. The development will occasionally require the layover space to complete construction activities. The temporary layover space will remain in place for the full duration of the development project which may take up to a few years. To accommodate this temporary layover, A small section of parking will be restricted along 195th in front of the school to allow for a bus layover space. Short term temporary parking restriction signs will be in place until crews can install longer term parking restriction signs.

You may have seen some new white roadway edge line markings painted on some streets near the Light Rail stations. We are working on rolling out marked bike lanes over the summer in the following locations:

• 5th Ave NE from the Light Rail Station to NE 155th Street
• 10th Ave NE from NE 175th Street to NE 190th Street
• NE 180th Street from 10th Ave NE to 15th Ave NE

Painted edge lines are nearly done. Next, installation of some parking restrictions will occur. In some areas, restrictions will be only to parking on the pavement, allowing for continued use of the shoulder for parking. In other areas like 5th Ave NE, full parking restrictions will be implemented. Full parking restrictions on 5th Ave NE also help to address prevalent illegal parking, and parking posing sight line challenges at intersections and crosswalks. Implementing bike facilities on these streets aligns with the Transportation Element vision set by the Comprehensive Plan. The Transportation Element also includes policy that prioritizes bicycle facilities over on street parking.

These bike lanes are a low-cost improvement project implemented through City and King County maintenance crews. They will improve the safety of walkers and bicyclists alike – in areas with no sidewalk, pedestrians can legally walk in the marked biked lane.

Staff have recently completed a parking demand study around the light rail station areas. Permit parking criteria were met for many streets surrounding the stations. Staff will be developing a budget request to support Sound Transit Light Rail station garage overflow parking mitigation. If the budget request is approved, the City will conduct outreach to determine whether neighborhoods support permit parking or time limitations such as 2-hour time limitations for some parts of the day. Permit-based parking requires residents to pay a fee. More information will be posted in early 2027, with potential outreach to follow.
