Code interpretations are used to clarify definitions or items in the code that are unclear or uncertain. They can also be used in limited instances, defined in the code, to determine parking rates for unlisted use, or whether certain unlisted uses are allowed. A request for interpretation of the development code is not intended to replace a preapplication meeting for a specific project, nor is it intended to replace the zoning variance, special use or other application requirements. Some examples include: 

• Unlisted use clarification that is not clear in the Shoreline Development Code.
• Definition clarification for words that are not clearly defined in code.
• Code intention clarification when it is not clear what is intended by a code requirement.

How to Apply

Apply for this permit online at the City of Shoreline's eTRAKiT permitting portal. Once you are logged into your account, select Apply/New Permit from the left-hand sidebar and select the following permit type from the drop-down menu: Pre-Intake Record (PIN).

Once PIN requests are submitted, the rest of the intake process is facilitated by a permit technician. A permit technician will send further instructions by email to complete the process.

• Cover Letter
  • Clearly indicate the development code provisions (provide a reference to chapters, sections and page numbers and specific text) that you wish to have interpreted. Accurately and clearly describe any circumstances that may clarify your request for interpretation.  
• Site Plan
  • The plan must show any information that will clarify the request.
