Phase: Adoption of Master Plan

The Parks, Recreaton and Cultural Services (PRCS) Board reviewed and recommended the Master Site Plan for approval by the Shoreline City Council. On May 18 the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Foundation (KBGF) Board voted to support the Master Site Plan.  The final master plan report is being prepared for the City Council to review in September.

Minor changes were made to the draft Master Site Plan to meet Shoreline Planning Department code requirements for emergency vehicle turning radii for the new parking lot.  These minor changes will not affect the number of parking spaces on site.

Six public workshops have been held since September 2009 providing the community with a history on the purchase of Kruckeberg Botanic Garden, information on the Master Site Plan process and the opportunity to give feedback in the development of the Master Site Plan.  A full site survey has been completed and an assessment of existing buildings and structures on site has been done. The existing plant collection has been fully documented in a format that will allow Garden staff to better manage the collection over time. The Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Foundation Board has been working on a new mission statement to reflect the values and priorities of the Board.

Kruckeberg Botanic Garden

The City purchased the property in January 2008 and held a dedication in June 2008. Planning to create the master plan began in March 2009.

Overview & History
In May 2006, Shoreline voters approved a bond issue to acquire park property and improve parks throughout the community.  One element of the bond was to acquire the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden. This four-acre site is home to a collection of rare and native plants protected by a conservation easement. The City purchased the property and will make minor improvements and the non-profit Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Foundation will maintain and operate the Garden.

The Kruckeberg Botanic Garden is dedicated to the educational, cultural and aesthetic enrichment of the community and all who visit. Mareen and Arthur Kruckeberg assembled the Garden’s four-acre plant collection over many years. Set in a wooded, park-like atmosphere, the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden is rich in native plants of the Pacific Northwest and unusual species from other lands.

Events
The Garden is open to the public at designated hours, for tours, by appointment, for horicultural workshops and volunteer work parties. Please contact the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Foundation at www.kruckeberg.org.
