2017-2023 Parks, Recreation & Open Space Plan [pdf]

On July 31, 2017 the City Council unanimously approved the 2017-2023 Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS)Plan. This update to Shoreline’s Plan for parks, recreation and cultural services began in January 2016 and represents a culmination of community-generated ideas for the future. The Plan is centered on the theme:

“Securing our Foundation, Shaping our Future,” defined as -

  • Securing our Foundation - Take care of what we already have and make current facilities work for us.
  • Shaping our Future - Provide for growth through smart development and targeted acquisition.

This Plan is a blueprint for Shoreline's parks, recreation, and cultural services for the next six years and it lays the groundwork for many years to come. The following Strategic Action Initiatives emerged from the process as a guide for the future. They are designed to respond to the needs of the community, be specific and measurable actions that, when implemented, will make a visible and measurable difference in the parks, recreation and cultural services provided to Shoreline residents and visitors.

Strategic Action Initiatives:

  1. Build a Community/Aquatics Center

  2. Expand Opportunities to Connect with Nature

  3. Expand Recreation Facility Opportunities

  4. Serve the Full Spectrum of Aging Adult Recreation Needs

  5. Ensure Adequate Park Land for Future Generations

  6. Maintain, Enhance, and Protect the Urban Forest

  7. Enhance Walkability In and Around Parks

  8. Support Diverse Communities

  9. Enhance Place-making through Public Art

  10. Secure Sustainable Funding

  11. Ensure Administrative Excellence

Background

The PROS Plan, which must be updated every six years to qualify the City for certain state and federal grants, is a document that creates a 20-year vision and framework providing for Shoreline’s recreation and cultural programs and facilities, and for maintaining and investing in park and open spaces.

If you have any questions about the PROS Plan update, please contact the Parks Department at shorelineparks@shorelinewa.gov (206) 801-2600.

The adoption of the update to Shoreline’s Plan for Parks, Recreation and Open Space will amend the Shoreline Comprehensive Plan’s Parks and Open Space Element and the Capital Facilities Element. For more information about the Shoreline Comprehensive Plan, please visit shorelinewa.gov/compplan.
